YOUR CAREER - TAKING RESPONSIBILITY
You have to take charge of your career - if you leave it to fate or your employer, you will find yourself marching to a drum that is certainly not yours. Self responsibility means:
HONESTY - about your skills, abilities, likes, dislikes, hopes and fears
ASSERTIVE - be decisive and be prepared to take calculated risks to realise opportunities
REALISTIC - what is actually possible?
DISCIPLINE - focus, structure and consistency on what you need to do
PERSISTENCE - don't give up, even when faced with setbacks or negative comments
PROACTIVE - don't wait for luck, create your own luck
To get you started, ask yourself what are the major "pushes and pulls" in your career to date. Use the following questions as inspiration:
- What risks have you taken to develop your career?
- What have been the major turning points in your career to date?
- What events have had a significant effect on your career?
- How has your job helped others?
- Why have you left jobs in the past?
- Who has influenced you most in your career?
- What has made certain jobs attractive to you?
- What have you disliked about your career so far?
- What opportunities have you chased or aspired to?
